Eccentric Art of Dali
Dedicated Web Shop for Salvador Dalí

I designed a web-shop aimed at selling prints from the famous surrealist artist Salvador Dali. This website allows his art pieces to stand out by keeping a minimalistic aesthetic. I took on this project to create a space where artist appreciators can easily purchase and view his works.

Challenge
How might we create a space where art lovers can access high quality prints without buying from unethical sources?

Research & defining target audience
During my research process for this project, I wanted to focus on looking at competitor websites that sell art prints from famous and renowned artists of our time. Many e-commerce sites that I found were drop-shipping platforms where they sell cheap prints in multiple forms such as shirts, mugs, phone cases, etc. This is very unethical and promotes consumerism, as it takes away from the artists' works and sell them for a very cheap price. Additionally, the quality of these products are far from desirable.
My design aims to target this problem, by creating a platform dedicated to a single artist that sells their prints in high quality and donates a part of the profits to a charitable organisation. While my design does not focus on the organisational part, it played a role in my decision making for the concept.

Ideation Process
I always start my projects by creating a visual/ concept board, so that I can capture the overall aesthetic that I am designing for. In this instance, I wanted to focus on creating a minimalistic website concept, so that the art pieces can stand out. Salvador Dali is known for his surrealist and colourful paintings; I saw the need to let them stand out on their own, as a colourful web design would clash with the works and potentially overwhelm the user. When choosing for the colour palette, I tried to incorporate colours that appear throughout his pieces, so that the website could still complement his works.

Low Fidelity Prototype
After conceptualising the main features and flow of the website, I moved on to making a lo-fi prototype that is a combination of a few of the sketches I made previously. I proceeded to conduct a quick testing with a few users. The feedback I received was mostly positive, but I need to iterate on a few layout decisions I made. Mainly, the users felt that the shop section should be on a separate page rather than in the home page. The shop section being placed below the 'about the artist' section, felt unfitting and made the artist section feel displaced and random.

High Fidelity User Flow

Once I gathered the feedback, I made iterations to my Low Fidelity and turned it into a High Fidelity interactive prototype. Upon receiving positive feedback for my final product, I made an User Flow chart, so that the different pages could be understood in a glance.
Unique assets created
I created custom assets for this project. They mainly consist of button designs. The font was downloaded from a public font website and every other asset was created by me for this project. During this work I also explored text animation in Figma for the first time.

Reflection
During this project I learned about the importance of layout in web store design. The final result meets all the expectations I set for myself and it portrays the minimalistic aspect I wanted to include. The goal was to portray Salvador Dali's works in a website that embraces the eccentric character of his pieces while keeping the design engaging and interesting to look at.
The Landing page to the website invites the user to enter a space that is solely dedicated to the artist, making the user feel like they are a part of it. Once they reach the home page, they see a short description so that the user can learn more about the website itself. As they navigate through it, they have the possibility to learn more about the artist himself and view his most renowned works throughout the years. Each product has its dedicated page where the date, name and description is displayed.
I learned…
that the importance always lies in user feedback and receiving criticism. I had to learn to be accepting of criticism at an early age since I finished my high school degree in arts, which is a critical field. Throughout the years I learned that criticism is what will improve my work and my understanding in design. In this project too, the harsh criticism I received from my peers and tutors helped my push the limits of my understanding.
